Why Student Athletes Shouldn't be Paid
Now that we went over why student athletes should be paid, we have to go over why they should not be paid. Some people argue that they already have their academics being paid for. If they have a full ride in college what else could you possibly need? You get free food because you are on the athletic food program, free academics, a free space to sleep at. They receive everything that is actually needed besides actually getting paid, but everything that you would need to pay for comes free because of their scholarship. Being able to play at the collegiate level in itself is a great opportunity and should not be outshined by the "we want to be paid component."
If student athletes started to get paid it would take the genuinity of all NCAA sports. Some college athletes would think that they deserve to get paid more so they would hold out on going to practice and games in hopes of getting a larger contract. Getting paid would turn the NCAA into a business that it is not meant to be. The riches colleges would pay the top recruits a lot of money to come play for their program. That would mean that the smaller schools with not alot of money would most likely get cut from the NCAA because they would have no purpose. If you have no top talents then what is the point of having you being part of the NCA? Student athletes being paid would add more diva like actions to the NCAA and would make it more like the NFL or NBA. People watch college sports because there are no diva like personalities clashing every day, these are supposed to be normal humble college kids that know everything could be taken away from them at an instant. If they got paid it would take away some of the passion the players have for their sport. They would think of everyday as another check instead of trying to work to the ultimate goal that is going pro. Also, if student athletes got paid then they would have to pay taxes. With irresponsible spending and taxes, it could put the college student in debt. That is not a ideal position to be in while still in college.
